CyberLink PowerDirector 13 Ultra is a pro-level video production and editing suite that is well within the grasp of talented amateurs. PowerDirector specializes in speed, especially in 64-bit Windows systems. It creates themes, subtitles, slideshows, and 3D animated titles; supports end-to-end 4K and 3D; and bundles more than 100 video-editing tools and many extras, including unlimited free templates and other resources, in the DirectorZone. Speed features: PowerDirector's blistering, 64-bit TrueVelocity four-video engine supports OpenGL and multiple graphics cards. Enabling shadow files of HD video downloads during the setup process speeds up editing but degrades previews, though the final video quality is unaffected.
User experience: PowerDirector's quick-launch screen let us choose the Full Feature Editor, Easy Editor, or Slideshow Creator. The Full Feature Editor packs a lot in an efficient, customizable layout topped by its four main tools: Capture, Edit, Produce, and Burn Disc. Rooms display content: Media Room, Particle Room, and so on.
Extras: The Ultra suite bundles many tools and extras, including SmartSound for audio tracks, Apple's QuickTime, and a menu of Magic Tools for quick fixes.
Cons
Download: PowerDirector 13's 6GB RAR file took a while to download and required third-party software to extract. Installation (and reinstallation) may be easier with the boxed CD edition.
Extra Startup entries: Choosing QuickTime's automatic Apple software update option adds an entry to your Startup Menu that can delay booting.
Bottom Line

Creating, editing and handling multimedia projects can be a lot of tedious work, especially when you don't have the right tools for the job. Fortunately, nowadays there's a broad range of software solutions that can come to your aid.
Several ways to start your projects
Right after you launch it, Power Director greets you with a splash screen that enables you to adjust a bunch of basic settings and create a new project in various ways.
You can switch between 16:9, 4:3 and 9:16 aspect ratio modes, launch the app in 'Timeline,' 'Storyboard,' 'Slideshow Creator,' 'Auto' or '360 Editor' modes and set it to always run in 'Timeline' mode.

Feature-rich interface
The app boasts a comprehensive interface that provides you with a plethora of features, which can be easily accessed. The layout is not cluttered, but inexperienced users might still get confused easily, due to the multitude of functions.
The main window consists of several sections where you can manage the contents of your projects, but also arrange, preview or edit them however you see fit. The library section also supports Explorer-like controls, such as dragging and dropping or selecting multiple items using the CTRL or Shift buttons on your keyboard.
Effects, animated objects and audio controls
If you ever feel that your project needs to be more lively, you can easily decorate it with various objects provided by PowerDirector. For instance, you can add visual effects to video or image content such as filters, text masking or transitions.
More so, you can add text for your titles or breaks and customize it by picking from the vast list of effects, which includes rotation, fade and blur. Adjusting the volume of audio tracks can be done by navigating to the appropriate section and dragging the sliders to the desired position.
Advanced editing features
You can modify a particular part of your project by double-clicking it directly in the timeline section. This grants you a huge selection of customization possibilities.
For instance, editing a 'PiP object' lets you alter values related to its chroma key, shadow, border, reflection, flip, 3D and fades, but you can also adjust motion-related parameters, such as selecting its path and tampering with rotation settings.
Produce movies and put them on discs
After you're done fine-tuning your projects, you can save the result on your computer or produce a film based on them. You just need to go to the 'File' menu and select the 'Produce Movie' or 'Batch Produce...' options. Here you can also create a video or audio capture by accessing the appropriate function.
Even more, if you're ready to distribute your work, creating discs can be done directly from the application, without needing any other third-party solutions, by using the 'Create Disc' feature in the 'File' menu.
Extensive configuration window
If you're more of a tinkerer and are not entirely satisfied with the application's default settings, you can access the setup menu by either using the 'Preferences' function in the 'Edit' menu, clicking the gear-shaped button in the main toolbar or hitting 'Alt + C' on your keyboard.
The settings are organized into various categories so that you can identify them easier. The 'Preferences' window lets you adjust general settings, but also ones related to editing, files, display, hardware acceleration, projects, production, capture and confirmation.
